Discount Roald Dahl ticket offer to celebrate World Book Day

Danny the champion of the world

Tamworth Borough Council’s Arts and Events team is marking World Book Day on Thursday March 3 with a one-day reduced price ticket offer to a summer show which celebrates the work of one of the country’s best-loved authors.

The award-winning open-air theatre company Illyria will be performing Roald Dahl’s Danny, the Champion of the World outdoors in Dosthill Park on Saturday July 2, in the year that would have seen the famous storyteller celebrate his 100th birthday.

Tickets to the performance will be offered at a discounted price to mark World Book Day on Thursday March 3. Tickets purchased on this day only will be available at a reduced price of £5 each when purchased online or through the box office. The usual price is £8 and £6 concessions.

Deputy Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, Cllr Robert Pritchard, said: “This year marks the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl so it is very fitting that we have been able to secure the acclaimed Illyria with this timely production. I grew up reading Roald Dahl books and his work still forms a major part of reading at school.

“As World Book Day is also coming up, we thought it would be great to celebrate the global event by offering audiences a special deal for the summer Roald Dahl performance.

“Illyria has performed in Tamworth many times and we expect this to be another great showing. Our summer evening outdoor theatre productions are very popular so we urge people to take advantage of this deal while they can.”

As one of the country’s most foremost interpreters of Roald Dahl’s work, Illyria has been able to secure the rights to its fifth Dahl title as the open-air touring company enters its 25th anniversary year.

Danny, the Champion of the World tells the story of young Danny, who lives with his father in a caravan.
When Danny turns nine, he is devastated to discover his father’s secret passion for pheasant poaching on the estate of the nasty, greedy landowner Victor Hazell.

One night, Danny wakes to find his father has not returned from a night of poaching. Fearing he may be in danger, Danny sets off on a rescue mission and soon finds himself masterminding the most incredible and exciting plot ever attempted against Victor Hazell.

Adapted by David Wood, Illyria promises a magnificent, funny and heart-warming story, perfectly suited to the open air.
