Saxon Weekend Tamworth

Ever wondered what life was like as a Saxon? Well now you can find out at this fun-packed historical weekend set in the stunning Castle Grounds on 18 and 19 of September 2021. 10am - 5pm both days.

During the Saxon times, Tamworth was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Mercia. This special Saxon celebration will give you the opportunity to travel back in time and see a side to Tamworth that you don’t normally see. Think fires, battle and armour, pottery, heraldry, myths, legends, stories, archery and much more!

Activities include: Saxon & Viking Pottery Making Workshops, Children’s Saxon & Viking Purse Making Workshop, Saxon & Viking Wattle & Daub Construction, Saxon & Viking Games, Saxon & Viking Cooking. This event is packed full of educational and factually-fun workshops from embroidery to coin making, to demonstrations of Saxon burial rites and many spectacular battle re-enactments.

10am – Show starts and Living History opens
11am – Skirmish
11.30am – Training Circles
12pm – Kiddie Vike!
1.30pm – Weapons Display
2pm – Njal’s Saga
2.30pm – Kiddie Vike
3.45pm – Main battle
5pm – End of show and close of Living History
(The time table will be the same for both days.

With the Castle’s brand new Battle & Tribute Exhibition which was supported thanks to Lottery players through The National Lottery Heritage Fund being newly open to the public this year, why not plan a visit to the Castle as part of your Saxon packed weekend?  The exhibition showcases amazing pieces from the Staffordshire Hoard and provides a fascinating exploration of Tamworth’s Saxon history.
